2027: Christian Group Warns Against Defections, Demands Stronger Internal Democracy

A non-denominational civil society organisation, Christian Conscience Group, has called on political stakeholders across the country to strengthen internal democracy within political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group made the appeal in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Yetunde Akinluyi, and National Secretary, Kolawole Verrals, following its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
Reacting to the ongoing party primaries nationwide, the organisation congratulated candidates who emerged victorious while advising aggrieved aspirants to seek redress through internal party mechanisms instead of defecting to rival political parties.
“We have watched with keen interest the ongoing party primaries across the country. We congratulate those who emerged victoriously while urging those who lost to explore internal mechanisms for redress rather than defecting from one party to another,” the statement read.
The group stressed that strengthening internal democracy remains critical to sustaining and deepening Nigeria’s democratic process.
It also urged political actors to place national interest above personal ambition as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Speaking on the country’s security challenges, the organisation called on the Federal Government to adopt new and more decisive strategies in tackling insecurity and banditry across the country.
“For the upteenth time, we call on the government to adopt unusual approach, think outside the box in tackling insecurity. Nigerians deserve a safer and better nation than one where bandits continue to ravage communities unchecked,” the statement added.
While commending the efforts of security and intelligence agencies, the group urged them to intensify intelligence gathering and deploy more resources toward identifying and apprehending bandits and their collaborators.
The organisation further decried the rising cases of killings and insecurity, insisting that urgent action was needed to restore peace and public confidence.
With the 2027 general elections still about two years away, political activities across the country have intensified, as party primaries, defections and political realignments continue to dominate national discourse.
The ongoing primaries have also triggered concerns over allegations of imposition, vote-buying, harassment of aspirants and manipulation of delegates within major political parties.
