Atiku Demands Release of Nnamdi Kanu

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has demanded the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He described Kanu’s continued detention as “an open sore on our nation’s conscience” and “a stain on our belief in the rule of law”. Atiku lent his support to the campaign led by activist Omoyele Sowore, calling for Kanu’s release or due prosecution.
He emphasized that defying court orders granting Kanu bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice.
Atiku’s statement adds significant weight to the growing calls for Kanu’s release, framing the issue as a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice and democratic principles. The call for Kanu’s release is also backed by Sowore, who has announced a peaceful protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on October 20 to demand Kanu’s freedom ².
