2027 Lagos Governorship Race: Diaspora Group Backs Obanikoro’s Appointment as Hamzat Campaign DG

A political support group, Lagos Diaspora for Hamzat 2027, has thrown its weight behind the appointment of former Minister of State for Defence and ex-senator, Musiliu Obanikoro, as Director General of the campaign organisation of Obafemi Hamzat ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

The group described the appointment as a strategic decision capable of strengthening grassroots mobilisation and expanding the campaign’s political reach across the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Convener, Ayodeji Tinubu, the group said Obanikoro’s extensive political experience and deep knowledge of Lagos politics make him an ideal choice for the role.

The organisation, which comprises Lagosians living across the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East, expressed confidence that the former lawmaker possesses the leadership capacity required to coordinate the campaign effectively.

“This appointment is indeed a classic case of a round peg in a round hole,” Tinubu stated.

He noted that Obanikoro’s decades-long involvement in public service and politics would serve as a major asset to the campaign structure.

“Senator Obanikoro’s vast political experience, outstanding leadership credentials, strategic thinking, and deep understanding of Lagos politics make him exceptionally qualified for this important responsibility,” he said.

According to the group, Obanikoro’s ability to build consensus and manage diverse political interests within the party would help consolidate support for Hamzat within the All Progressives Congress.

“We are confident that under his leadership, the campaign structure will be strengthened and strategically positioned to deliver the candidacy of Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat to victory at the polls,” Tinubu added.

The diaspora-based group also pledged to leverage its international networks and professional resources to support the campaign, saying members are prepared to mobilise Lagosians both at home and abroad in support of Hamzat’s ambition.

“We wish Senator Musiliu Obanikoro a successful tenure as Director General and pray that Almighty God grants him wisdom, strength and good health as he undertakes this critical assignment,” the statement added.

The endorsement comes weeks after the Lagos chapter of the APC declared Hamzat as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

The announcement was made by Jon Temlong, Chairman of the APC National Governorship Election Committee, in the presence of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party leaders and other stakeholders.
