Oputa Targets Strong Super Eagles Debut After Unity Cup Call-Up

Enugu Rangers fullback Chibueze Oputa has expressed gratitude following his first-ever invitation to the Super Eagles, promising to make the country proud at the 2026 Unity Cup scheduled to hold in London later this month.
Oputa earned a place in coach Eric Chelle’s 27-man squad for the four-nation tournament after impressing with consistent performances in the Nigeria Premier Football League season.
The right-back played a key role in Rangers’ solid defensive campaign, helping the club record one of the league’s best defensive records with only 26 goals conceded while remaining in contention for the title.
Reacting to the call-up via his X account, Oputa thanked the Nigeria Football Federation for the opportunity.
“Thank you to the Nigeria Football Federation for the opportunity. Forever grateful. Time to make the country proud,” he wrote.
The Unity Cup, featuring Nigeria, Zimbabwe, India and Jamaica, will kick off on May 26 at The Valley in Charlton, with Nigeria set to face Zimbabwe in the opening semi-final clash.
The winner of the encounter will progress to the final on May 30 against either India or Jamaica, who meet in the second semi-final fixture.
Oputa is expected to use the tournament as an opportunity to push for his senior national team debut, while Chelle continues to assess home-based talents and fringe players ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
