Algeria Secure Crucial First World Cup Win Since 2014 After Beating Jordan

Algeria Fight Back to Defeat Jordan 2-1 and Revive World Cup Campaign
Algeria staged a spirited second-half comeback to beat Jordan 2-1 at Levi’s Stadium on Monday, securing their first FIFA World Cup victory since 2014 and keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stages firmly alive.
The North African side dominated possession and created several opportunities in the opening half but found themselves trailing against the run of play in the 36th minute. Jordan, making their World Cup debut, shocked Algeria when Nizar Al Rashdan capitalised on a rare opportunity to fire his side into the lead.
Despite the setback, Algeria returned from the break with renewed determination and quickly turned the tide. Head coach Vladimir Petkovic introduced Nadhir Benbouali at halftime, and the substitute made an immediate impact by heading home from a corner to level the score.
The equaliser sparked a wave of relentless Algerian attacks as Jordan struggled to contain the growing pressure. Algeria’s persistence eventually paid off when Amine Gouiri scrambled the ball into the net from another corner-kick situation, completing a dramatic turnaround and handing his side a vital victory.
The result lifts Algeria to three points in Group J, level with Austria, while Jordan’s defeat officially ends their hopes of progressing beyond the group stage. The outcome also confirms Argentina as winners of the group.
Although he did not find the back of the net, Ibrahim Maza was instrumental in Algeria’s resurgence. The young midfielder, relatively quiet before halftime, drove his team forward with energetic runs and creative play in the second period, forcing Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila into several crucial saves.
Jordan came agonisingly close to securing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. Inspired by the impressive goalkeeping display of Abulaila, the tournament newcomers frustrated Algeria for long spells and looked capable of holding on for a memorable win.
However, Algeria’s superior squad depth and determination ultimately proved decisive. Having struggled to convert their dominance into goals from open play, Petkovic’s men relied on two well-executed set pieces to secure all three points.
In the end, Benbouali’s headed equaliser and Gouiri’s close-range winner ensured Algeria found a way past a resilient Jordan side and kept their World Cup knockout ambitions alive.
