2027 Polls: NDPC Threatens Legal Action Against Anyone Who Leaks Nigerians’ Personal Data

The Federal Government has warned that anyone found misusing or exposing Nigerians’ personal data ahead of the 2027 general elections will face prosecution.

The warning was issued by the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Vincent Olatunji, during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday.

Olatunji said the commission is stepping up efforts to ensure that personal information collected by political parties, institutions, and other stakeholders is handled in line with Nigeria’s data protection laws.

According to him, concerns over the privacy and security of voter information have become increasingly important as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

He noted that political parties are gathering large volumes of personal information from their members and supporters but questioned whether adequate safeguards have been put in place to protect such sensitive data.

“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards, what kind of guardrails have they put in place? They don’t even know. That’s the truth,” Olatunji said.

He stressed that the NDPC would closely monitor compliance with data protection regulations and warned that any individual or organisation found unlawfully disclosing or mishandling citizens’ personal information would be prosecuted.

The commission’s renewed warning underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening data privacy and protecting Nigerians’ personal information as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
