The Lagos State Government has issued a query to an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) over allegations that he collected a ₦20,000 bribe from a suspected environmental offender.

The development followed the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing the officer receiving money during an enforcement operation.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on Friday that the officer had been formally queried and that a Personnel Management Board (PMB) would be constituted to investigate the matter in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.

Wahab said the alleged conduct was unacceptable and contrary to the ethics and core values of the agency, stressing that the state government maintains a zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct in the public service.

He warned that any officer found guilty after the investigation would face disciplinary action as provided by the relevant regulations.

The commissioner also cautioned residents against offering bribes to government officials, noting that giving and receiving bribes are criminal offences. He urged Lagosians to comply with the law and avoid compromising enforcement officers.

According to the query letter dated July 10, 2026, and referenced MOE/LAGESC/431/56, the officer was accused of collecting ₦20,000 from an offender in an incident that was recorded and circulated on social media. The letter stated that the footage was viewed by the Lagos State Governor.

The government described the alleged act as corruption and extortion, adding that it constitutes serious misconduct under the Public Service Rules.

The officer has been directed to submit a written explanation within 48 hours, stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against him. The letter warned that failure to respond within the stipulated period would attract disciplinary measures.
