South Africa have secured qualification for the Round of 32 at the World Cup, becoming the second African nation to reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

Bafana Bafana booked their place after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in the early hours of today, with Thapelo Maseko scoring the decisive second-half goal that sealed all three points.

The result ensured South Africa finished second in Group A with four points, enough to progress behind group leaders Mexico, who topped the table with nine points following a convincing 3-0 win over Czechia.

South Africa now join Morocco as Africa’s representatives in the Round of 32. Morocco had earlier secured their own qualification after defeating Haiti 4-2, finishing second in Group C with seven points behind group winners Brazil.

The development highlights a strong showing for African teams in the tournament as attention now shifts to the knockout stage.
