Youths Besiege Abuja Court, Demand Sowore’s Immediate Release

Nigerian youths on Tuesday staged a protest at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, calling for the immediate release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.
The demonstrators gathered outside the court ahead of proceedings on Sowore’s application seeking the restoration of his bail and the setting aside of a bench warrant earlier issued against him.
Chanting solidarity songs and waving placards, the protesters repeatedly demanded his freedom, singing, “Free Sowore now. We want a better Nigeria.”
The protest comes after the court ordered Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
Justice Mohammed Umar had adjourned the matter after counsel to both parties adopted their respective processes in the application. The court fixed Tuesday, June 30, 2026, for its ruling on the request to reinstate Sowore’s bail and vacate the bench warrant.
The protesters also appealed to security personnel stationed at the court entrance to support their cause, urging them to act as responsible citizens in the interest of building a better Nigeria for future generations.
Security operatives monitored the protest as court proceedings continued.
