Court Admits Killaboi’s Statement, Interrogation Video in Augusta Murder Trial

- The Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere on Thursday admitted as evidence the written statement and interrogation video of Benjamin Nnayereugo, popularly known as “Killaboi,” in the ongoing murder trial over the death of his girlfriend, Augusta Onuwabhagbe.
The exhibits were tendered before Justice Ibironke Harrison during the testimony of an investigating officer from the State Criminal Investigation Department, DSP Oderinde Gafar.
The prosecution, led by Director of Public Prosecutions, Adedayo Haroun, called the police officer after the conclusion of testimony by the deceased’s mother, Cordelia Onuwabhagbe.
While testifying, Gafar narrated how the defendant was tracked, arrested and extradited from Qatar through international security collaboration.
According to the witness, Killaboi voluntarily wrote his statement during interrogation, after which the prosecution tendered the document and accompanying video evidence, both of which were admitted without objection from the defence.
The interrogation video was subsequently played in open court.
Under cross-examination by defence counsel, Marcel Oru, the police witness was questioned on the circumstances surrounding the statement-taking process before being discharged.
The prosecution informed the court that it had concluded the testimonies of the investigating officer and the deceased’s mother, adding that only one witness remained before closing its case.
Justice Harrison adjourned the matter to June 17 and 18, 2026, for continuation of trial proceedings.
During an earlier hearing on April 22, 2026, Augusta’s mother emotionally told the court that she once regarded the defendant as a son and never imagined he was capable of murder.
She testified that Killaboi frequently visited her home, ate meals there and sometimes slept over before the tragic incident that led to her daughter’s death.
Cordelia also told the court that she only became aware of the defendant’s alias, “Killaboi,” after Augusta’s death.
The witness recounted that the defendant had taken her daughter on trips to Mauritius and Seychelles, alleging that the first known incident of physical abuse occurred during the Seychelles trip.
According to her testimony, the defendant allegedly became angry after seeing Augusta record videos of herself in bikinis intended for online promotional jobs.
She further denied allegations that her daughter was violent or involved in prostitution, insisting that the accusations only surfaced after her death.
The court also heard claims that Killaboi spent millions of naira on gifts and birthday celebrations for the deceased, including designer items and an iPhone, which the witness alleged he later retrieved after the killing.
Killaboi is accused of killing the 21-year-old at his residence in Ajah on July 13, 2023, before fleeing Nigeria.
He was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force State Criminal Investigation Department in October 2023, while an INTERPOL Red Notice was later issued against him.
The suspect was initially arrested in Sierra Leone under a false identity but escaped during a prison break in November 2023 before relocating to Doha, Qatar, in January 2025.
Authorities later confirmed his identity through biometric verification, leading to his arrest in February 2025 and extradition to Nigeria in April 2025.
In June 2025, the Lagos State Government filed a two-count charge against him bordering on alleged murder and indecent interference with the victim’s corpse.
Killaboi pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in November 2025.
