UN Raises Alarm as 35 Million Nigerians Face Acute Hunger Crisis

The United Nations has warned that about 35 million Nigerians could face acute hunger between June and August 2026, as the country grapples with a worsening food insecurity crisis.

In a statement released on Friday, the UN Humanitarian Country Team in New York described the situation as one of the largest hunger emergencies globally, with Northern Nigeria bearing the heaviest burden.

According to the UN, nearly one in seven Nigerians is expected to experience severe food shortages during the upcoming lean season.

The organisation warned that delayed humanitarian support could force millions of vulnerable families to skip meals, sell off valuable assets, and withdraw children from school, worsening the long-term social and economic impact.

The UN further disclosed that an estimated 6.4 million children across the North-West and North-East regions are at risk of acute malnutrition this year.

It called for urgent international funding to expand life-saving interventions, noting that the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, valued at 516 million dollars, remains significantly underfunded.

The latest humanitarian report revealed that only 215 million dollars — just over 40 per cent of the required funding — has been received as of May 2026.
