Liverpool Target Iraola as Slot Exit Sparks Managerial Search

9views

Liverpool are set to begin formal discussions with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola as the frontrunner to replace Arne Slot following the Dutchman’s departure from Anfield.

The Reds officially parted ways with Slot on Saturday, just a year after he guided the club to the Premier League title, prompting an urgent search for a new manager ahead of pre-season preparations.

According to reports from BBC Sport, Liverpool have identified Iraola as their preferred candidate after his impressive spell with Bournemouth. The 43-year-old led the Cherries to their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing sixth place and a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool’s hierarchy are keen to make a swift appointment, with Iraola widely regarded as the leading contender despite interest in other managerial options, including Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness and Lens manager Pierre Sage.

Iraola confirmed in April that he would leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, attracting attention from several clubs across Europe, including Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen.

The Merseyside club are reportedly seeking a coach capable of implementing a more aggressive and high-intensity style of play, a factor believed to have influenced the decision to part company with Slot.

Another key factor in Iraola’s favour is his relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked with the Spaniard during his tenure as Bournemouth’s technical director.

Despite securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Liverpool endured a disappointing domestic campaign, finishing with 60 points — their lowest total since the 2015/16 season and 25 points behind Premier League champions Arsenal.

A former Spain international and Athletic Bilbao stalwart, Iraola began his coaching career with AEK Larnaca before managing Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano in Spain. He joined Bournemouth in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly rated managers.

Liverpool are expected to accelerate negotiations in the coming days as they seek to finalise their managerial appointment before the start of preparations for the new season.
