Tuchel Throws World Cup Challenge to Bellingham, Says No England Star Is Guaranteed a Starting Spot

England manager Thomas Tuchel has warned that even established stars must earn their place in the squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup, insisting that midfielder Jude Bellingham faces strong competition for a starting role.

Tuchel said England’s growing squad depth means there are now “14 or 15 potential starters” capable of making the first XI, underlining the fierce battle for places as preparations for the tournament intensify.

Bellingham, who played a pivotal role for England at UEFA Euro 2024, has experienced a less consistent role since Tuchel took charge in January 2025. The Real Madrid midfielder has started only four matches under the German coach and has made three substitute appearances, with injuries and fitness concerns limiting his involvement at various stages.

Despite that, Tuchel stressed that the 23-year-old remains an integral part of his plans.

“Yes, he has a fight on his hands,” Tuchel said when asked about Bellingham’s chances of securing a starting berth at the World Cup.

“He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.”

Since Tuchel’s arrival, much of the spotlight has shifted to Morgan Rogers, who has emerged as one of England’s most reliable performers. Rogers has featured in 12 of the coach’s 13 matches and remains the only player to have appeared in all eight of England’s World Cup qualifying fixtures.

However, Tuchel insisted that selection decisions remain open, with players still battling to secure key roles before the tournament begins.

The England boss also praised Bellingham’s recent return to form following injury setbacks earlier in the year. According to Tuchel, the midfielder has rediscovered his rhythm both physically and mentally, showing the intensity and determination that have made him one of England’s standout talents.

Bellingham impressed in England’s recent World Cup warm-up victory over New Zealand national football team, producing a lively display after coming on at half-time and briefly captaining the side.

Tuchel highlighted the midfielder’s “decisiveness and bite” as signs that he is approaching peak condition ahead of the global showpiece.

Meanwhile, vice-captain Declan Rice is expected to remain a cornerstone of England’s midfield, adding further competition to a squad packed with talent and experience.

Tuchel’s latest remarks reflect England’s increasing depth across midfield and attacking positions, with the manager making it clear that reputation alone will not guarantee a place in the starting lineup.
