2027 Presidency: Civil Society Group Threatens Legal Action Over Tinubu’s Academic Credentials

2views

A civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the status of the academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, the group urged the electoral body to provide a legal position on issues surrounding the President’s Chicago State University (CSU) certificate and other educational documents ahead of the 2027 general election.

The letter, dated June 19, 2026, and signed by the Head of the group’s Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, was received at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja on the same day.

According to CFRPA, the request is aimed at ensuring transparency in the electoral process and preventing individuals with questionable credentials from contesting future elections.

The organisation raised concerns over information contained in academic records released by Chicago State University following a 2023 court-ordered disclosure in the United States. It alleged inconsistencies relating to educational history provided in documents linked to President Tinubu’s admission records.

The group further argued that INEC should clarify the legal implications of any disputed credentials in relation to constitutional provisions governing eligibility for public office, particularly Sections 137 and 285 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

CFRPA maintained that the clarification has become necessary to address lingering public concerns and to strengthen confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The organisation also warned that it may seek judicial intervention if INEC fails to publicly state its position on the matter.

Among its requests, the group urged the commission to determine whether the documents submitted by President Tinubu during the 2023 election cycle have any bearing on his eligibility to participate in future elections.

The civil society group said its demand is in line with its mandate to promote democracy, accountability, transparency and good governance in Nigeria.
