The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant reduction in road traffic crashes during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, recording a 27 per cent decline in accidents and a 22 per cent drop in the number of crash victims compared to the 2025 festive period.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, describing the achievement as one of the agency’s most notable operational successes in recent years.

According to Ohaeri, the outcome reflects the effectiveness of the corps’ proactive traffic management strategies, intensive public enlightenment campaigns, robust enforcement efforts, and improved emergency response mechanisms.

He revealed that road traffic crashes recorded during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol Operations fell from 191 cases in 2025 to 142 in 2026. The number of people involved in crashes also decreased from 1,364 to 1,064 within the same period.

The FRSC spokesperson further noted that the corps recorded a 25.4 per cent reduction in injuries, with the number of injured persons dropping from 576 in 2025 to 430 in 2026.

“These impressive gains represent hundreds of lives protected and families spared the devastating consequences of road traffic crashes,” Ohaeri said.

He attributed the success to the strategic deployment of personnel and operational assets across major highways and critical traffic corridors nationwide. Measures implemented during the operation included round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-driven surveillance, motorised chain patrols, prompt rescue services, traffic calming initiatives, stakeholder partnerships, and sustained public awareness campaigns.

According to him, these interventions helped create safer travel conditions for millions of Nigerians who travelled before, during, and after the Sallah celebrations.

Ohaeri also quoted the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as commending FRSC personnel, Special Marshals, and partner agencies for their dedication, professionalism, and resilience throughout the operation.

Mohammed said the results demonstrate that strategic planning, sustained enforcement, and collective commitment to road safety can significantly reduce the burden of road crashes across the country.

The Corps Marshal also appreciated motorists and other road users for complying with traffic regulations and heeding the corps’ safety advisories during the festive period.

He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strengthening road safety interventions, expanding stakeholder engagement, and improving operational efficiency to achieve further reductions in crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

Mohammed urged Nigerians to maintain safe road practices beyond festive seasons, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of all road users.
