‘Lagos Is More Expensive Than LA’ — BNXN Sparks Debate Over Cost of Living in Nigeria

3views

Nigerian singer BNXN, formerly known as Buju, has stirred conversations online after claiming that living in Lagos is more expensive than residing in Los Angeles, California, one of the United States’ most expensive cities.

The Afrobeats star made the remarks while reflecting on his recent stay in the United States, highlighting what he described as a major difference in the financial realities of both locations.

According to BNXN, one of the most noticeable changes he experienced abroad was the absence of constant requests for financial assistance from acquaintances and members of the wider community — a situation he says is common in Lagos.

“I was telling someone, since I got to the United States, I haven’t seen one egbon adugbo asking me to press money,” he said.

The singer explained that while Los Angeles is globally recognised for its high cost of living, particularly in terms of housing, daily life appears less financially demanding because of fewer informal social obligations.

He argued that in Lagos, expenses often extend beyond personal needs, with many individuals expected to support family members, friends and people within their social circles.

“The only thing expensive in LA is housing. Here you just pay your rent and you’re good,” BNXN added.

His comments have since ignited mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians agreeing that social expectations and extended family responsibilities significantly increase the cost of living in Lagos. Others, however, disagreed with the comparison, citing the high costs associated with healthcare, transportation and other essentials in major American cities.

The debate has also drawn attention to the broader conversation around economic pressures in Nigeria, where rising inflation and the increasing cost of basic necessities continue to affect millions of residents.

While opinions remain divided, BNXN’s remarks have once again highlighted the complex realities of life in Lagos and the unique social dynamics that shape financial experiences in Africa’s most populous city.
