Reps Move Closer to State Policing, Approve 18 Constitutional Amendment Clauses

3views

The House of Representatives has adopted a report recommending the establishment of state police and approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses aimed at enhancing governance and security in Nigeria.

The report was adopted during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The approved clauses form part of a broader constitutional review process being undertaken by lawmakers to strengthen the country’s institutional framework and improve the effectiveness of governance.

The move marks a significant step in the long-standing debate over the creation of state police, a proposal advocates argue would help tackle growing security challenges through decentralised policing.

Lawmakers noted that the constitutional amendments are designed to address critical national issues and reform key aspects of Nigeria’s democratic and administrative structures.

Further legislative procedures are expected before the proposed amendments can become part of the Constitution.
