The suspects, identified as Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi, were apprehended following intelligence-led investigations carried out by operatives of the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters in collaboration with community stakeholders.
Until her tragic death last Thursday, Wendy was a post-basic midwifery student at Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, Obowo, and resided in an off-campus apartment within the community.
Confirming the arrest on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed that 32-year-old Onyema Okonkwo allegedly confessed to raping and killing the student in a bid to conceal the crime.
Okoye further revealed that the suspect implicated 25-year-old Emmanuel Onyekachi as an accomplice, alleging that the victim was killed after recognising them.
“Operatives of the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, in collaboration with community stakeholders, have arrested two suspects allegedly connected with the rape and murder of Wendy Achumba, aged 21, a post-basic nursing student of Mercy College of Nursing Science, Umulogho, whose lifeless body was discovered in her private off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho, in Obowo LGA,” the police spokesperson stated.
According to him, the suspects were arrested after sustained investigative efforts by police operatives working closely with members of the community.
“During the investigation, Onyema Okonkwo confessed to the killing of the victim after forcibly having unlawful carnal knowledge of her on multiple occasions in an attempt to conceal his crime and further implicated Emmanuel Onyekachi as being involved in the matter,” Okoye added.
The police said the suspects had since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Bosso, assured residents that the matter would be handled diligently and professionally, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Umuadara Umulogho, Eze Patrick Uwalaka, alongside community members, publicly condemned the killing and distanced the community from the incident.
Gathering at the village square on Sunday, the monarch invoked traditional sanctions against those responsible and maintained that Umulogho remained peaceful and safe.
“We, the people of Umulogho, are here to denounce this wicked act. We know nothing about it, and we exonerate ourselves and the land from any repercussions. Let the gods deal with the perpetrators,” the monarch declared.
He also urged anyone with useful information regarding the crime to come forward before “the wrath of the deities.”
Also speaking, President of Umulogho Youths, Chidiebere Iweajunwa, commended the role played by the community youth body in assisting security operatives to arrest the suspects.
