President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.

Adeniyi secured a second term during the organisation’s 147th and 148th Council Sessions held in Brussels, Belgium.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the re-election as a significant endorsement of Adeniyi’s leadership and Nigeria’s growing reputation in global customs administration.

The President said his recent decision to extend Adeniyi’s tenure as Comptroller-General was driven by the need to sustain ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to Tinubu, the overwhelming support Adeniyi received from the international customs community reflects his success in strengthening institutional capacity, driving reforms, modernising customs operations and positioning the Nigeria Customs Service among leading customs institutions worldwide.

He noted that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Service has recorded improvements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, border management, stakeholder engagement and technology-driven reforms.

Tinubu also commended the introduction of the B’Odogwu customs clearance platform, describing it as a homegrown innovation that has simplified cargo clearance, reduced dependence on foreign systems, improved transparency and enhanced operational efficiency.

The President further praised the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator Programme, the expansion of non-intrusive inspection technology, stronger collaboration with relevant agencies and continued compliance with international customs standards.

“Adeniyi’s unanimous re-election is not only a personal honour but also a recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration,” Tinubu said.

He added that Adeniyi’s leadership has been marked by bold reforms that have strengthened border security, improved revenue generation, facilitated legitimate trade and modernised customs operations through indigenous innovations.

Tinubu expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council would strengthen international cooperation, promote secure and efficient global trade and further enhance Nigeria’s standing in the global customs community.

The President also wished Adeniyi continued wisdom, strength and success as he continues to lead reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service while discharging his renewed international responsibilities.
