Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has disclosed the heartfelt message he received from Argentina captain Lionel Messi following their thrilling World Cup Round of 32 encounter on Saturday.
The veteran goalkeeper produced an outstanding performance at the Miami Stadium, making a string of crucial saves to keep Cape Verde in the contest. Despite his heroics, Argentina secured a 3-2 victory after extra time to book a place in the Round of 16.
Speaking after the match, the 40-year-old revealed that Messi approached him after the final whistle and praised his display.
“I went up to Messi after the game. He hugged me and said, ‘You are great. Your people should be proud of you.’ That was incredible for me,” Vozinha told Hindustan Times.
He added that hearing such words from the Argentine legend meant a great deal to him.
“Hearing words like that from someone like Leo Messi means a lot to me. I thanked him and said, ‘Thank you, Leo. You are the best.’ Then I asked if we could swap shirts. Leo said he would give it to me in the tunnel after the interviews,” Vozinha said.
Messi’s gesture capped a memorable night for the Cape Verde goalkeeper, whose performance earned widespread praise despite his country’s elimination from the tournament.
