Jonathan Meets Sierra Leone President Bio Over West Africa’s Peace, Democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that he recently met with Julius Maada Bio in Freetown to discuss peacebuilding, democratic governance, and regional cooperation across West Africa.
Jonathan disclosed this in a statement shared on Tuesday via his social media platforms, noting that the visit formed part of his diplomatic engagements as Special Envoy to President Bola Tinubu, as well as his responsibilities with regional democratic institutions.
According to the former Nigerian leader, discussions with President Bio focused on strengthening peace, political stability, and democratic values within the West African sub-region.
“Today, I paid a special visit to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio… Our discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional cooperation within the West African sub-region,” Jonathan stated.
He added that the meeting also involved conversations around the roles of the Economic Community of West African States Commission and the West African Elders Forum in promoting stability and cooperation across member states.
Jonathan further expressed appreciation to President Bio for the warm reception and hospitality extended to him during the visit.
The diplomatic engagement comes amid renewed political attention on Jonathan following a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja declaring him eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The court ruled that Jonathan remains constitutionally qualified to seek the presidency despite previously taking the oath of office twice — a judgment the Peoples Democratic Party faction led by Kabiru Turaki described as being in line with “law and common sense.”
