A commercial driver has lost his life following a fatal multi-vehicle collision along the Lagos-Apapa Expressway, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.

The tragic incident, which occurred on the busy expressway, involved a commercial minibus and a Toyota Tundra vehicle, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

Taofiq disclosed that preliminary findings by security personnel at the scene indicated that the commercial minibus driver sustained severe injuries and died instantly due to the impact of the crash.

“Preliminary investigations conducted by security personnel at the scene revealed that the driver of the commercial minibus sustained grievous injuries and died instantly due to the devastating impact of the collision,” he stated.

He explained that LASTMA officials, who were carrying out routine traffic monitoring and surveillance within the corridor, responded swiftly to the emergency.

According to him, the operatives immediately coordinated rescue efforts, secured the accident scene, managed vehicular movement and prevented further obstruction on the heavily congested route.

Taofiq added that the remains of the deceased driver were released to members of his family at the scene of the incident.

He further noted that the damaged vehicles involved in the crash were evacuated from the roadway and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for a comprehensive investigation.

“The vehicles were thereafter handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for exhaustive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, with a view to determining liability and facilitating any necessary legal proceedings,” he said.

Despite the disruption caused by the accident, Taofiq commended the prompt response of LASTMA personnel, noting that effective traffic management measures helped restore normal vehicular movement along the affected corridor within a short period.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the bereaved family and urged motorists to prioritise safety on the roads.

“The General Manager of LASTMA conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and admonished motorists, particularly commercial transport operators, to exercise heightened caution, maintain unwavering compliance with extant traffic regulations and cultivate a culture of responsible driving at all times,” Taofiq added.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over road safety and the need for strict adherence to traffic laws on Nigeria’s major highways.
