Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army have arrested a 51-year-old man, Felix Yadeh, for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians of over ₦3.6 million through a fake military recruitment scheme in Taraba State.

Yadeh was apprehended at Bantaje Village in Wukari Local Government Area by members of a local vigilante group before being handed over to troops at the Forward Operating Base in Wukari.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly collected a total of ₦3,627,000 from several victims under the false promise of securing recruitment slots into the Nigerian Army.

The army disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed that his younger brother allegedly instructed him to collect the money as supposed recruitment fees for enlistment into the military.

Items recovered from the suspect included an Infinix Android phone and ₦3,050 cash.

Military authorities stated that the suspect and recovered items remain in custody as investigations continue to uncover possible accomplices and determine the full scope of the alleged fraud network.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended both the troops and local vigilante members for their swift action and vigilance.

Akaliro also warned Nigerians against falling prey to fraudulent recruitment agents, stressing that recruitment into the Nigerian Army is free, transparent, and strictly merit-based.

He urged members of the public to report any individuals involved in extortion, impersonation, or recruitment scams to relevant security agencies.

The brigade reaffirmed its commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Taraba State and neighbouring communities.
