Tinubu Orders Continued Evacuation as Nigeria Brings Home 66 From South Africa Crisis

The Federal Government of Nigeria has completed the evacuation of a second group of its citizens from South Africa, bringing home 66 Nigerians following renewed xenophobic attacks in the country.

The evacuees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday night as part of an ongoing repatriation exercise approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in response to the recent wave of violence targeting foreigners in South Africa.

This latest return follows the arrival of an initial batch of 258 Nigerians on June 11, who were flown back aboard a chartered Air Peace aircraft.

Speaking on the development, the Lagos representative of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Dipo Onabowale, said the second evacuation was coordinated with support from the Chairman and CEO of ValueJet, Kunle Soname, alongside officials of the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa.

He conveyed the commendation of NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praising the Federal Government for swiftly responding to the crisis and prioritising the safety of Nigerians abroad.

Onabowale added that logistical challenges experienced during the first evacuation had been addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assuring that all registered Nigerians affected would be brought home safely.

“The Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured that all registered Nigerians in South Africa would be evacuated,” he stated.
