The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down and prosecute the gunmen responsible for the deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two police officers and two civilians along the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba North Local Government Area.

The victims were reportedly attacked on Sunday night while travelling in a convoy returning from an official assignment.

The convoy included the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Chief Ben Nwankwo, who had represented the governor at an event and was on his way back to Awka when the assailants struck.

Although Nwankwo escaped unhurt, several members of the entourage sustained injuries during the fierce gun battle, which eyewitnesses said lasted for several minutes.

Residents of the area said the attackers, believed to have been hiding in nearby bushes, opened fire on the convoy as it approached, triggering panic among communities along the route.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Law Mefor, described the attack as a direct assault on the peace, security and democratic order of the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mefor expressed the government’s shock over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The Anambra State Government is shocked by the attack on the convoy of the Chief of Staff to the Governor on Sunday night, May 31, 2026, between 8pm and 9pm at the Orumba North–Awka South borders, while returning from an official assignment,” the statement said.

“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the government and people of Anambra.”

The commissioner noted that four lives were lost in the attack and assured residents that security agencies were already working to identify and apprehend those behind the killings.

“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice. The Anambra State Government sends its deepest condolences to the families of those who died and shares in their grief.

“The police and other security agencies are working to find and bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice,” he added.

Mefor stressed that the incident would not derail the state’s ongoing efforts to combat crime, describing it as an isolated case after more than a year of relative peace and improved security across Anambra.

“This isolated incident after more than one year of peace and security in the state will not affect our determination to remove all forms of crime from Anambra,” the statement concluded.
